About the Central Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Group

The Central Queensland Mine Rehabilitation Group (CQMRG) has existed for over 20 years as a successful networking forum of rehabilitation practitioners operating in the Central Queensland area.  CQMRG was established at a time when mining companies required information on suitable species to grow in mine spoil as well the methods required to do this successfully.

The initial goal of the group according to one foundation member, was to provide support for environmental officers working at Central Queensland mines to answer such questions as: ‘what trees should we grow in mine spoil?’

CQMRG continues to this day largely due to the cooperative efforts of the individual industry practitioners, consultants, and government participants that make up its membership.

CQMRG most typically functions through a "field days" networking model, with practitioners gathering at operating mine sites to view and discuss various aspects of rehabilitation practice.

The Group is effective as a result of its openness of membership, honesty of discussion and from a driving desire of its membership to drive effective and value-adding rehabilitation outcomes.

CQMRGs first workshop was held at Oaky Creek Mine in July 1993 and then included representatives of the mining industry, government regulators, unions, academia and various supporting consulting and contracting industries; and including names now synonymous with the early development of mine rehabilitation.

In 2013, CQMRG celebrated its 25th workshop with a 2-day workshop at Central Queensland University, with the theme of "looking backwards - stepping forwards" and extending a special invitation to those who had attended the inaugural 1993 workshop.
